Chiropractors are concerned with the holistic well-being of their clients. They are often knowledgeable about nutrition, and they can advise their clients about avoiding food allergens and sensitivity. Chiropractors may be able to help improve the body’s immune system with adjustments. Proper alignment can provide a great deal of relief from asthma and allergies in general. Allergens come in many forms and appear throughout the year, often in the summer time. Weather affects the spread of pollen, which is a very common substance to cause an allergic reaction. Pet dander, food, pollen, and the venom from insects that sting are some common allergens. Patients react to allergies in different ways, which is often why it takes time for them to identify their allergy and seek treatment. Family medical history is often indicative of the potential to have certain allergies. Allergies also increase the risk of an asthma attack in those who already have asthma.1
Treatments for Allergies
Allergens are intolerances, or the immune system’s overreaction to a particular substance. These can include seasonal allergies, skin irritations, and digestive problems. Lab tests and physical exams are helpful in pinpointing the problematic allergens. Some treatments for clients will require food eliminations. Others may recommend homeopathic remedies.2 Many chiropractors use adjustments to provide allergy relief. Dr. Greg Mortimer, of FSP Wellness Center, said, “What we do is open those little vertebras where the nerves go to the lungs…Over time, (a child) will get strong enough where his body may outgrow his allergies…It is the same with an adult…I can help…the sinuses and lungs open up and help the body become stronger on the immune system level.” The level of pressure in the adjustments used on a child differs greatly from adult treatment.3 Some practitioners use the “activator adjustment” technique to provide patient relief. One case study in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health (2009), compiled by Frank M. Painter, DC, demonstrated that chiropractic care afforded a child the opportunity to discontinue medication and nebulizer use.4 Another way that chiropractors help to treat allergies is with the treatment of vertebral subluxations. Misalignments cause dysfunction and irritation in the vertebrae, causing a negative signal to be sent from the spine to the brain. This signal can come from the same pathway that interprets normal environmental conditions, corrupting the regular signal so that the body creates an allergic reaction. Not all cases of allergies can be treated by chiropractic care, and vertical subluxations may be just one reason for the occurrence of a treatable allergic reactions.5 A doctor should first be consulted on the severity of the allergy before the patient looks for alternative treatment.
Treatments of Asthma
By 2020, the Pew Environmental Commission predicts 1 in 14 people will have asthma. It costs $11 billion dollars annually, is heavily responsible for school absences, and asthma causes about 2 million hospital visits and 5000 deaths a year. In asthma, the bronchioles in the lungs become inflamed, spasm, and produce mucus. This leads to an “attack” of gasping for air. Asthma can be trigged by “allergies, stress, pollen, (and) pollution…” leading to a “life of bronchodilators, drugs, and cortisone, all of which have serious side effects”. Chiropractors often see the body as self-healing. Some feel that subluxations of the spine can affect the nervous system’s control of the body’s functions.6 Improper posture might be one cause of misalignment that leads to an asthma attack. The affected nerves affect other areas of the body, which could include a negative impact on the normal functioning of the lungs. Of course, avoidance of pollution, performing physical activity, and eating right are all ways that help maintain a reduction of asthmatic effects. Asthma cannot be completely cured, but its symptoms can be kept in check and asthma attacks should not be common.7 Chiropractors can perform adjustments and recommend necessary supplements to help the body resolve its issues. Some supplements include: Vitamin B with Vitamin C, Quercetin with Bromelain, Vitamin A, Lobelia, Coenzyme Q10, and Magnesium with Calcium.8
Chiropractic Care vs. Traditional Medicine
Having a healthy immune system allows us to fight off bacteria and viruses. We can resist disease and infection, reduce stress, and enjoy better well-being. Traditional medicinew may not have all of the answers when it comes to allergies, especially when medication is seen as the only solution. “The chiropractic approach is to remove vertebral subluxations…Freed of nervous system stress, your body will work more effectively to neutralize the allergy-causing chemicals in your environment.”9 Treatments from both chiropractic and traditional medicine may be sought. Visiting a chiropractor and living a healthy lifestyle can often reduce the severity of conditions before medication and serious medical care are required. Decreasing the effects of allergy symptoms is just one example of the potential of chiropractic care. One study has shown that more patients found chiropractic care to reduce their lower back pain when compared to patients who were given traditional medications.10 Chiropractors have the potential to treat many conditions.
