Biokinetics is concerned with movement and health in the body, and Bio-KineticsTM is a system of procedures developed by Dr. L.E. Newsum.
The Biokinetics Profession
As defined by The Biokinetics Association of South Africa (BASA), biokinetics is “BIO + KINETICS = LIFE + MOVEMENT = LIFE THROUGH MOVEMENT…The Science of Movement and the application of exercise in rehabilitative treatment of performance”. Movement is necessary in all stages of life, and it impacts quality of life, working, communicating, learning, health and development. Over time, movement is lost or diminished, due to disease, injury, heredity, and aging. It can happen traumatically or gradually. Loss of movement impacts the individual, loved ones, and public health, in that it may require resources to resolve. Sometimes movement loss and disability can be prevented through disease detection, prevention or treatment, as well as rehabilitation. The biokinetic professionals work to detect conditions and “promote quality of life and individual independence, rather than more costly institutionalized and supported care”. They do this by promoting health and physical functioning through the modality of exercise. With a “scientifically-based physical activity” program, biokinetic professionals promote rehabilitation and “maintenance of physical abilities”. They can also measure and evaluate the patients’ body composition, posture, glucose and blood pressure levels, lung and heart rate functioning, muscle strength, flexibility, endurance, power, and fitness.1
Professionals can be trained in biokinetics through university programs, such as the one at Bethel University. The college notes that biokinetics is beyond just exercise; it is meant to use “science to promote healthy lives”. With the major, the “applied scientists” can address aging, lifestyle, inactivity, and physical performance concerns. Students in the program learn about biological systems and body stressors so that they may come up with strategies to prevent injury and disease, increase quality of life, and improve the physical performance of the patients.2 Some of the courses in the Biokinetics major, at Bethel, include classes in human anatomy, statistics, motor development, physiology, strength training and conditioning, laboratory techniques, intervention in disabilities and chronic diseases, prevention of athletic injuries, nutrition, physical fitness, biomechanics, and internships.3 A biokineticist, or a “bio”, serves as “an allied health practitioner specialized in the rehabilitative modality of exercise”. The education they receive prepares them for work “in final phase rehabilitation and prescriptive exercise interventions for the health promotion and maintenance of special populations”. Unlike chiropractors, they do not perform manipulation, mobilization, or “direct soft tissue release”.4
Chiropractors may use the bio-kinetics techniques. In this definition, the brain is in charge of controlling the body and determines health. As a result, “Bio-Kinetics trains and educates your brain to do more than keep you alive, it brings new life, healing and helps patients achieve optimal health.”5 The technique differs from the biokinetic major and profession discussed earlier. The Bio-KineticsTM technique is meant to “clear trauma” that is “imprinted in our brain, nervous system, and cells”. Trauma (emotional, physical, chemical) reduces the ability to survive and adapt. The painless, non-invasive Bio-KineticTM chiropractic procedures stimulate “the brain stem, thalamus and hypothalamus with a small hand held device”.6 Dr. L.E. Newsum founded the Newsum Bio-Kinetics Health Restoration System (AKA Bio-Kinetics Health System, NBHRSTM). In searching for the causes of health and disease, Dr. Newsum looked into physiology, neurology, quantum physics, and alternative health. He believed that even though people may exercise, eat right, “think good thoughts” and take supplements, those actions are not enough for good health. Newsum noted, “Coordinated energy running in and through all living things is the absolute requirement for good health”. The goal of Bio-KineticsTM, therefore is “optimum life energy”. The spine and muscles send information to the brain and they must be in balance for wellness and health. The muscle spindles send messages to the cerebellum and thalamus, and the thalamus receives information from smell sight, sound, and the labyrinthine ear. These messages are sent to the neo cortex, which provides information to the brain stem. The brainstem is in charge of breathing, digestion, heart rate, and hormones, as well as involuntary back and neck muscles and balance. The body receives the greatest information from the “spinal joint mechanoreceptors and the muscle spindles”, according to Newsum, so balancing the muscles and spine are “paramount to wellness”. Bio-KineticsTM procedures are meant to “normalize aberrant brain wave frequencies” that have been caused by the body’s emotional, chemical, electromagnetic, and injury disruptions. They could lead to more range of motion, less stiffness, a stable and stronger spine and neck, less disc pressure, a slowing of degenerative arthritis, more brain stimulation, and the body may have increased energy output.7
According to Newsum, Bio-KineticsTM has many benefits. It is said to restore optimal functioning to organs and glands, correct spinal problems, reduce healing time from many types of injuries, eliminate chemical sensitivities and allergies, eliminate negative feelings’ effects, and balance the body’s energy frequencies. As a result, the body can adapt to “magnetic and other potentially harmful…electrical pollution” without devices. Movement is thought to be important to life because the movement of the body’s joints, muscles and sensory organs converts “environmental and mechanical stimulation into electro-chemical nerve energy that is sent to the brain”. When the body is functioning normally, the neuron firing is predictable, measurable, and organized. Any disruption may result in immediate symptoms, or perhaps could take years to manifest. This could lead to organ deterioration by the time the disruption is detected. Emotional trauma and physical injuries are the two leading causes of disruption. While most physical injuries heal, Newsum notes that the ones involving the spine do not; therefore, he noted, “Virtually all spinal problems are the result of compensation to misalignment of the cervical spine”. They may have begun during the birth process from trauma in delivery. The spine adapts to the cervical injury, stressing the joints and impacting the muscle tone. If the compensation continues to the sacrum, the hips, feet, ankle, and knee joints are affected. Bio-KineticsTM is meant to correct these compensation issues. It is also said to help with emotional, chemical, pollution, and electromagnetic frequency (EMF) disruptions. As Newsum stated, “Bio-kinetics restores nerve function by eliminating the interference from mechano joint and muscle stretch receptors caused by fixations and adhesions”. The New-Stim instrument is used “on the precise contact area” to eliminate the interference and correct dysfunctions. It is said that Bio-KineticsTM can clear organ, spinal, musculo-skeletal malfunctions. Allergies, chemical sensitivities, EMF interference, and stress may also be “corrected in minutes on most people”. With corrective care and ongoing monitoring, health could be maintained for patients who are treated with the Bio-KineticsTM system. According to Newsom, “disease is the absence of health”; thus, restoring health rids disease and sickness.8 The New-Stim Stimulator, patented in 1995 with “Bio-KineticsTM Contacts and “Stress-Test-Correct” procedures” are used in Bio-KineticsTM. The stimulator is a 2-ounce hand-held instrument that is self-triggering, but without torque or rebound into the joints. It delivers anywhere from 4 oz. to 5 lbs. of force per each thrust. Bio-KineticsTM procedures are said to influence the “thalamus – cortical hypothalamic loop”, as proven by the structure balance test, pre and post electrocephagraph tests, surface electromyography studies, and the physiological blind spot test, per the Newsum Bio-Kinetics Health Restoration System website.9
