What is a Subluxation?

subluxation

According to www.chiro.org, the word “subluxation” comes from the Latin words meaning to “dislocate” (luxare) and “somewhat or slightly” (sub.)  Chiropractic was the first profession to coin the term subluxation and it still surrounds the philosophy today.  Chiropractors believe that a subluxation is caused from trauma or tight muscles that pull the bones of the spine or extremities out of its proper alignment.  Subluxations cause the bones to press on the nerves which in turn disrupt nerve conduction to crucial bodily organs.  This causes diseases to manifest within the body and typically causes symptoms within the individual.  How do you correct spinal or extra-spinal (extremity) subluxations…chiropractic adjustments.

Chiropractors are proficiently-trained in the art of adjustments and spend years fine-tuning their delicate skill.  There are many different types of adjustments to correct various subluxations.  The chiropractor uses different contact points on him/herself as well as the patient.  Then, they deliver a thrust in a specific line of drive to correct the misalignment.  Correcting a subluxation allows the body’s innate intelligence to heal itself from within.  This return of homeostasis to the body reverses many diseases and prevents many more from occurring.  Many people don’t realize that their extremities such as their temporal mandibular joint of the jaw, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle can also subluxate.  This can be either the joint itself or individual bones.  According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, “Eleven percent of musculoskeletal complaints in the office setting are caused by anterior knee pain (which most commonly results from PFPS), and PFPS constitutes 16-25 percent of all injuries in runners.”  Other causes of anterior knee pain include disease such as:  Chondromalacia patellae, Iliotibial band syndrome, patellar stress fractures, Osgood-Schlatter disease, Many times one proper adjustment or adjustments over a period of time can alleviate or eliminate symptoms and improve or restore full range of motion to the area.
