Have you heard the term subluxation going around in Chiropractic offices in your community? You’re probably wondering what this term means. A subluxation means a mis-alignment of a vertebra or a bone out of its normal positioning. Some sources say that this term means to “slightly dislocate.” This pulls on the surrounding musculature causing a tug of war action between opposing muscles and ligaments. Subluxations cause abnormal and decreased range of motion, pain, local inflammation, and sometimes acute strains and sprains.
What does a Chiropractor do?
A Chiropractor is someone who specializes in the musculo-skeletal and nervous system and has studied extensively for 7-8 years. They first do a physical examination on the patient to locate abnormal range of motion within the spine in the form of restrictions. Sometimes additional diagnostic tests are needed like an x-ray or MRI to determine the severity of the condition or problem. Next, the Chiropractor will deliver a HVLA (high velocity low amplitude) thrust in the direction of the mis-alignment to correct it safely and effectively. This will alleviate any pressure on the surrounding nerve roots, correct the dysfunction of spine, and restore abnormal posture. A Chiropractor may also help to provide wellness care to the spine and/or extremities as well throughout one’s lifetime. They will help to further find and correct any subluxations that may arise due to any trauma or repetitive wear or tear.
