About Spinal Cord Injuries
For many people spinal cord injuries can be traumatic and painful for a long period of time. Pain can be acute or chronic depending on the severity of the injury. The number one problem with spinal injuries is that nerve cells are unable to regenerate. If new cells regenerate, it would be hard to determine where the cells were connecting to. Also, there is a limited amount of space in the spinal column and growth of cells would be unattainable. Spinal cord damage is permanent because cells do not grow and regenerate.
Acupuncture
Spinal cord injuries can be very devastating. Acupuncture sessions are a form of effective therapeutic treatment for spinal injuries. Although acupuncture will not heal an injury, it provides temporary pain relief and improves the patient’s quality of life during the healing process. Clinical studies on acupuncture show increased sensation, reduction in muscle spasms, and improved bladder function. Also, other research indicates that the sooner acupuncture is applied after the injury occurs, the more improvement he/she will see in muscle spasms and sensations. The best results occur when treatment is given over long periods of time. Clinical studies show that patients who encountered the most improvement were given treatment up to twice a week for nearly five years.
