Massage therapists who have their own business typically earn the most income.  However, owning a business means more responsibilities such as building and maintaining their own clients, where as independent contractors working for a business are provided with clients.  Generally, those who earn an hourly wage earn less than therapists who are salaried.  Independent contractors usually split their earnings to cover costs such as the receptionist, working space, supplies, and equipment.  Massage therapists generally work 35 hours a week as it can be physically and emotionally demanding. A large percentage of people work part-time and use their massage therapy careers as a second income.  It is typical for part-time people to work approximately 10 – 15 hours a week.           

Success in the Massage Industry

Unlike many jobs, massage therapists don’t get promoted and their success isn’t based on achievements or amount of responsibilities.  Instead, the success of a massage therapist is supported by their clientele and education.  Many people will take extra classes to further their education and keep up with new techniques and trends.  Many prospective clients may want a massage therapist who is highly educated in the field so they can receive the best massage possible.  Typically, it takes six months to a year to build a successful clientele and reputable name in the community.  The industry requires a person to have good business skills as well as a nurturing personable attitude toward clients.
