There are a couple different interpretations for the definition of oriental massage. One explains that oriental massage is a form of massage in which the emphasis is on acupuncture, in which the body’s vital energy is channeled. Chinese use the term “jing luo” to describe these channels. Acupuncture points correspond to regions in which the “qi” emerges superficially in the skin. Twelve primary meridians exists within the body. Six meridians relate to yin and six of them work with the yang, and include many minor ones. The meridians of the body are interconnected as a network. Meridians of the body correspond to particular bodily organs and rhythms. Examples of primary organs include: small intestine, lung, and urinary bladder.
In contrast, the other form of oriental massage is typically done without certification at “entertainment massage parlors.” In the United States, oriental massage usually has a negative connotation to it. This doesn’t always have to be true, but typically speaking this type of massage isn’t therapeutic in nature; it’s more associated with erotic massage. The therapists/entertainers are usually not certified by any institution or licensed by the state to practice clinical massage therapy for therapeutic purposes respectively speaking. Some states allow the therapists to deliver the massages topless while dancing and others offer escort services as well. Many businesses are being prosecuted due to illegal activity taking place in many different communities all throughout the United States. Law enforcement agencies are realizing that this isn’t safe practice and shouldn’t be affiliated with the art of practicing safe, therapeutic, rehabilitative massage therapy for health and relaxation purposes only.
