Obtaining a Massage Therapist Certificate

Massage therapist

Do you really need a certificate to perform massage therapy?  While not every state requires massage therapists to be certified, it is recommended that massage therapists obtain their NCBTMB (National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork) certification.  NCBTMB certification requires individuals to complete the following tasks:

  • 500 classroom hours
  • Maintain professional standards that uphold the policies of the NCBTMB
  • Successfully complete the NCBTMB exam
  • Exhibit proficient knowledge and capability on necessary techniques
  • Attend yearly continuing education to be eligible for relicensure.

This certification provides many benefits for the massage therapist in the work field.  It can assist the therapist in obtaining work in a new state if he/she is relocated.  Some insurance companies will provide reimbursement for services provided by therapists with NCBTMB certification.  In addition, this certification allows prospective employers and clients to be confident that the therapist has achieved the highest standard in the field.  The competitive edge provided by the NCBTMB certification allows therapists to gain recognition in their field.
