Multiple Sclerosis and Chiropractic Treatment

Chiropractor Adjusts Patient's Neck

A case report by Erin L. Elster, D.C., reviewed the upper cervical management of a 47-year-old female with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).  The patient started experiencing symptoms at age 44 when she had loss of bladder function.  She did remember a traumatic fall about ten years prior to her symptoms.  She was diagnosed with MRI, after her neurologist observed multiple plaques.  Two years after the initial diagnosis, the patient started experiencing new symptoms: leg weakness and numbness and tingling in her arms and legs.  At this point, the neurologist recommended drug therapy for symptom relief.

Chiropractic Treatment

Upon evaluation by a Chiropractor, evidence of an upper cervical misalignment was evident.  The patient was treated with upper cervical adjustments for two years and after four months of treatment all MS symptoms were eliminated.  Following treatment, an MRI was performed and no new lesions appeared and there was a reduction of the pre-existing lesions.  Another MRI was taken 1 year following treatment, and again there were no new lesions and pre-existing plaques had reduced even more than the previous MRI.
