Massage University: What Does It Entail?

A massage university is more like a private institution established for the sole purpose of teaching the ancient art of massage therapy to prospective students.  These students study the following subject areas in great detail: human anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, pathology, hydrotherapy, and clinical application.  Some students also become proficiently trained in learning and applying orthopedic testing and range of motion assessment for sports rehabilitation.  These tests allow the therapist to assess the extent of injury and establish a proper, specific treatment protocol. 

Clinical massage

Clinical massage therapists have much shorter massage sessions, usually lasting anywhere from 15-30 min, but they are more specific.  Massage is starting to take a more clinical approach contrary to popular belief.  Some massage sessions provide a Swedish-based relaxation type of massage but a sports massage/clinical approach is necessary to treat injuries whether they are acute or chronic in nature.  The student is typically enrolled in school for about a year and it generally costs under 10,000.  This is inexpensive compared to formal college education.  A vocational training degree should not be mistaken for making less income.  Independent contractors and sole proprietors can make a very successful living as a licensed clinical massage therapist.  Upon completion of the massage therapy certificate the new therapist has the option of working in a variety of settings including but not limited to: spas, health clubs, chiropractic offices, hospitals, private practice, cruise ships, and sporting events including the Olympics.  Getting training at a massage university can be a very exciting and rewarding profession to enter into.
