Massage Therapy Education

Obtaining a degree in massage therapy opens up a number of opportunities for a massage therapist.  Massage therapists can make their own hours, set their pay, and choose who they would like to work with.  It is not only a personally rewarding career, it’s also a career that offers a wide range of opportunities both inside and outside the workplace. 

Learning Techniques

Obtaining a massage therapy education will teach the massage therapist how to properly massage each client.  Massage therapists will learn standard massage techniques and learn how to perform deep tissue massage, sports massage or Swedish massage.  Massage therapists will also learn more specialized techniques.  These techniques will primarily focus on acupressure points and myofascial therapies.  These techniques will help to relax the back and neck while releasing any toxicity within the body.  The more specialized techniques are taught only after the basic concepts are mastered.  Massage therapists will also learn about different relaxation and aromatherapy techniques that can be incorporated into their massages. 

Choosing Your School

It’s important for the new student to know that each massage therapy school is different.  Some schools may only specialize in teaching sports medicine or sports therapy rehabilitation massages.  Other schools may focus more on holistic approaches or offer teachings in Chinese medicine or acupuncture.  Even though some massage therapy schools may be different because they offer diverse specialties, the same essential massage concepts and basic structures are always taught in each school.  A massage therapy education can also vary within each state.  It’s vital for the massage therapist to check with local schools or their state to ensure that they only need a certification or degree to actively practice massage therapy.  Some states require both a degree and certification while others require minimal hours of instruction along with just a certification.  It’s important to always do your research before you decide to choose a particular school.
