Chiropractic exists as a conservative, non-invasive method for effective herniated disc relief. When considering treatment for a herniated disc, the Chiropractor will consider the severity of the disc injury to determine the most effective mode of care. The disc exists in the body as a circular cushion between each vertebra bone of the spine. Without the cushioning of the disc, simple movements such as rotation would be not only painful, but also difficult.
Herniated disc
A herniated disc results when the lining protecting the disc fluid collapses open. As a result, the disc fluid begins to slip out. The disc lining can crack when the body is deficient in water; therefore, adequate daily water intake is very important for preventing disc degeneration. When the disc fluid slips out, the fluid can impinge on nearby nerves, which can cause pain that radiates down to the legs. Once the Chiropractor has determined that a disc bulge has occurred, an appropriate course of treatment will be designed.
Treatments
A commonly used technique for herniated discs is the Flexion-Distraction Technique. The Flexion-Distraction Technique involves a table designed to stretch the spine. In addition, the Chiropractor can focus on the area of discomfort to relieve pressure on the inflamed nerves. Chiropractors also use Pelvic Blocking Techniques to aid in the treatment of low back injuries including herniated discs. Pelvic Blocking Techniques involve specially designed wedges placed underneath the pelvis along with the use of soft maneuvers to relieve pressure on inflamed nerves. In addition to addressing the areas of discomfort, Chiropractors will examine the entire spine to evaluate the presence of subluxations. Finally, exercise and nutritional modification may be advised to maximize healing and optimal wellness.[1]
