Getting A Career Started in Massage Therapy

Massage Therapist

What you need to know

Each state has their own set of regulations and licensing requirements to become a massage therapist.  Currently, 33 states regulate massage therapy and the remaining 17 require a business license to practice.  It’s recommended that potential massage therapy students research the requirements of the state they live in before joining a program.  Students should enroll in a program that is accredited by a national accredited agency such as the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA).  It is important to choose an accredited program because it shows that it meets high standards and will adequately train students to perform effective massage therapy.  Depending on the state, students are required to complete anywhere from 300 -1000 hours of training before they can begin practicing.  Although most states require a minimum of 500 hours, more locations are beginning to increase that number.

Various Requirements Prior to being Accepted in a Program

Most programs require potential students to have a high school diploma or GED.  It is helpful if the student has taken previous classes in anatomy, biology, humanities, or business because most will have to take those classes again while enrolled in a program.  Many schools will require an interview prior to admission.  Admission representatives at the schools want to view applicant’s communication skills and level of empathy because both skills are necessary in the massage industry.  Many schools will offer an open house or allow you to sit in on several classes before joining the program.
