Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia and fatigue respond favorably to supplements of Magnesium and Malic Acid.  According to the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Research Foundation, specialists are now “recommending malic acid and magnesium hydroxide complex for the treatment of CFS and related pain of Fibromyalgia.  Dr. Jay Goldstein of Los Angeles has found magnesium and malic acid to be a safe, inexpensive supplement and recommends that it be added to a list of potential beneficial substances for chronic fatigue.”  Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that causes generalized diffuse musculoskeletal pain and stiffness.  This condition is common in women between the ages of 30 and 50.  In addition, Fibromyalgia (FM) is associated with individuals who also suffer with irritable bowel syndrome and tension headaches.

A Clinical Test

In a clinical test of fifteen Fibromyalgia patients using a daily dosage of Malic Acid, all the patients reported significant improvement of their pain within hours of starting the supplement.  Patients suffering from fatigue may notice changes within approximately two weeks.  Current research suggests the Fibromyalgia (FM) and other symptoms may be a result of deficiencies of substances.  The synthesis of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates necessary for cellular integrity, normal activity and function are directly dependent on ATP availability.  Magnesium and Malic acid are necessary for the production of ATP.  Magnesium and Malate deficiency can induce hypoxia (which is a lack of oxygen).  This has been shown in muscle biopsies in Fibromyalgia patients.  Magnesium and Malic acid can protect against the toxic effects of aluminum.  These acids utilize phosphate for ATP synthesis.  Adequate magnesium levels prevent this toxic effect.  Malic acid is one of the most potent chelators of aluminum.  It has also been found to be the most effective chelators at reducing aluminum levels in the brain.

Fibromyalgia and Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care works on the nervous system; the most important organ system in the human body which controls and coordinates every organ and body part.  If there is a mis-alignment, or subluxation of the vertebra this can create interference to that particular organ or body part in addition to causing pain.  This can also cause an imbalance of the musculature therefore causing widespread diffuse pain like that of a Fibromyalgia patient.  Fibromyalgia is diagnosed with having 11 out of 18 tender points upon palpation.  Overall, this is a fairly misunderstood condition affecting thousands of Americans each year.
