As recognized professionals in the world of healthcare, a massage therapist will have many of the same professional responsibilities as other health practitioners. Aside from the general requirements of entering a massage school and the courses and clinical hours needed for successful graduation, a massage therapist, in most states, will be required to sit for a state licensure examination. When a therapist becomes licensed, they will then be able to practice in the state in which they are licensed. Obtaining and maintaining a professional healthcare license requires that it be renewed every four years and to renew a massage therapy license, a therapist will be responsible for taking continuing education courses during those four years.
Different types of courses
Different states have different continuing education requirements for healthcare professionals but generally a licensed massage therapist will be responsible for taking forty-eight hours of continuing education courses with an average of six of those hours needed in courses of ethics. There are many different continuing education courses available, giving a massage therapist a chance to learn new massage skills and techniques to help benefit and/or change their career path if desired. Online and home study courses are available as well, becoming more popular among therapists who find taking continuing education courses difficult due to time constraints or travel issues however states will regulate how many hours may be acceptable for these types of distance learning. Required continuing education for massage therapists ensures that when a client receives a massage from these licensed individuals, they are getting quality care from a knowledgeable and well educated massage therapist.
