Back Discomfort and Bipolar Disorder

The following synopsis in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research discussed a 52-year-old man who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder who presented for chiropractic care showing signs of anxiety and hemichorea movements.  The man presented with low back discomfort and pain which was achy in nature around his ischial spines of his pelvis; and neck pain diffuse in nature.  He was diagnosed seven years prior and decided to not be medicated for his condition.  He was unemployed due to panic attacks and intense anxiety.  When he suffered from these panic attacks he underwent hemichorea movements.  Chorea is a nervous system disease that displays jerky-like movements, mainly on the face and extremities.  The chiropractor introduced Omega-3 fatty acids and their importance in emotional disorders and the patient began taking them.  The man also noted sleep disturbances which takes him 2 hours to fall asleep on a typical night.  He was given a Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), which assesses both mental and physical status.  The normal is 50 for physical and mental assessments; on this visit his was 57 for physical status and 16 for mental.  At his first adjustment Thompson technique was applied; and after one week he noted his depression as improving.  After two weeks of treatment he noted absence of any anxiety attacks and chorea movements.  The next visit his SF-36 was re-evaluated and the findings were: his SF-36 had improved to 61 on the physical exam and mental was 21.  His mental status continued to improve and six months later had risen to 49, while the physical was 56.  In conclusion, this man still has difficulty working but his quality of life has improved greatly.  He has decreased depression/panic attacks and the chorea movements have remained absent thanks to chiropractic care.1
