Chiropractic care is a natural approach to health that focuses on the role of the nervous system in maintaining a healthy state within the body. The nervous system is comprised of both the central and peripheral nervous systems. The nerves in the body control movement and sensation. The nerves communicate directly with the brain by sending messages back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body. These signals result in our ability to move – scratch our nose, run, pull our hand away from a hot pan. They also control the function of our internal organs by telling the heart how fast it needs to beat, telling the lungs when to inhale and exale, telling our stomachs when to digest food, etc. In addition, our nerves are responsible for our senses, telling us when food tastes good/bad, we are hot/cold, we smell cookies or a skunk, etc.
Listen to your Body
As you can see, the nerves are essential in every aspect of our body. They listen to what our body is telling us, communicate that information to our brains, and then instruct the various body parts on how to respond to the information provided. If the nerves are not functioning properly, it decreases the body’s ability to respond to harmful items in the environment. These items can be external (a hot pan, an out of control car), or internal (harmful germs and bacteria in the body). When the body cannot respond appropriately to harmful items in the environment, it often results in sickness or illness.
Treatment
Chiropractic helps the nervous system to stay at its peak performance by removing items that might be interfering with the nervous system’s ability to function to its fullest extent. These blockages to the nervous system are referred to as subluxations. Subluxations occur along the spinal column as a result of the stresses we put on our spine through typical daily activities and trauma. Chiropractors determine where subluxations are located along the spine and then apply gentle, specific adjustments to those areas in order to return the nervous system to its most efficient state. In so doing, chiropractic can eliminate symptoms of disease in the body as well as proactively correct the body’s nervous system before symptoms of disease are even noticed. This results in improved health and well-being.
