Upper Back Pain Causes

Upper back pain can be caused by a variety of different injuries, bad posture, or just lifting a heavy object the wrong way.   Upper back pain can also result from poor stretching before or after exercise.  If you aren’t sure how to properly stretch before weightlifting or aerobic exercise, you may want to consult with a physical therapist or physical trainer.  If you are going to exercise it’s always important to stretch the back thoroughly and properly to prevent any injuries or further damage to the upper back.  There are different levels of upper back pain.

Upper Back Pain Treatments

Some patients may experience upper back pain that is very severe and they may need surgery to correct this issue from reoccurring.  Surgery, in most cases, is always the last option, once all other options have been exhausted for that patient.  Other patients may experience very little upper back pain but need some treatment to alleviate their symptoms to help them manage their pain more effectively.  If you do have mild upper back pain you can chose to make an appointment with a massage therapist, chiropractor or even a doctor who does trigger point injections.  A massage therapist will help to stretch and massage some of the knots felt in the upper back.  This will also help the patient to increase their circulation through the muscles and help them feel more relaxed.  On the other hand a Chiropractor will use manual manipulations that will help to adjust and realign the muscles back into place. This will assist the patient over time in alleviating the pain that is felt in the upper back area.  Typically, adjustments are made more than once.  A patient may be seen every few weeks to ensure the adjustments are holding into place.  The third option is to visit your doctor who can prescribe medication or inject trigger point injections the upper back.  The trigger point injections will help administer medication directly to the area where the patient is experiencing the back pain.
