A herniated disk can be very painful for a patient.  It’s important that the patient seek medical attention if they are experiencing drastic pain or weakness within their lumbar and spinal region.  A herniated disk is also known as a slipped disc or ruptured disc.  It directly affects the elasticity, within the spine which causes this disc pain.  The nerves around the disc are often inflamed and compacted.  This can also cause further pain and discomfort for patient. People that are diagnosed with a herniated disk have generally experienced a recent trauma, car accident, or sports injury.   Patients may also have a pre-existing condition such as spinal stenosis.  This can cause further damage to the disc within the back and possibly cause disc herniation. 

Symptoms

Patients can experience a number of different symptoms.  Some patients may feel a stinging or numb sensation within their spine, while others may experience extreme muscle weaknesses.  The symptoms vary with each patient.  The more severe cases may have different symptoms than patients with acute herniated disks.  If you are experiencing some of these symptoms, it is important to make an appointment with your doctor.  They may schedule you for an MRI or x-rays to detect any underlying issues.  You need to seek treatment right away, as there could be further damage to your back if you do not seek medical attention. 

Treatments

Treatments options will definitely vary with the severity of the disk herniation.  Some patients may be prescribed pain medication and be asked to apply hear or cold packs to their spinal area.  The heat and cold will help to reduce the inflammation and pain felt with the disc herniation.  In other cases patients may be asked to partake in physical therapy or exercise.  In some cases doctors may also give patients a medical injection.  This injection is administered within the office and is there to help direct the medication to the source of the problem.  It’s important to always ask your doctor of other alternatives, as your treatment will be unique and should be specified with your needs.
