Backache and its Causes

Oh, My Aching…..

Back! Who hasn’t heard that before? During a long car ride, long flight, long anything with little to no motion for your body will lend itself perfectly to an aching backside. Because there are so many causes of back aches and pains, it is important to seek professional medical attention from a chiropractic physician or osteopath to rule out any major issues in the back or extremities.

Several causes of back aches can be the result of disc herniation, muscle sprain/strain, muscle spasm, osteoarthritis or degenerative disc disease. Back aches can be felt in the neck, upper to middle back, lower back or pelvis. Depending on what is causing the back ache, pain, weakness, burning or tingling can radiate into the extremities. This pain can be felt as either sharp or dull, again depending on what type of trauma from which the back ache is resulting. The duration of back aches is categorized as either acute pain (lasting less than four weeks), sub-acute pain (lasting between four and twelve weeks) or chronic pain (lasting greater than twelve weeks). Chiropractic care and acupuncture are the most common, non-invasive treatments chosen among patients suffering with back aches. There are some uncommon causes of back aches that can include certain cancers, fractures, arthritis and infection. Although uncommon, it is important to be seen by a healthcare professional to rule out these causes, and if indicated, receive proper treatment for whatever the cause of a back ache.
