It is quite common that from time to time, everyone will experience some discomfort from abdominal pain. In many cases, abdominal pain is not serious and of no cause for great concern. Someone with a diet low in fiber or who does not drink an adequate amount of water is more prone to experience pain in their abdomen from constipation. Indigestion, which is a feeling of uncomfortable fullness following a meal or during, is a type of abdominal pain that can be caused by eating too quickly, smoking, alcohol consumption, stress, certain medications and some underlying medical conditions. Several other types of abdominal pain include menstrual cramping, ulcers, hernias, gas, gall stones and kidney stones, Crohn’s disease, food poisoning, lactose intolerance and many others. Because there are so many causes of abdominal pain, it is important to give a complete and accurate health history when speaking with a doctor. Following a health history and also a physical examination, a diagnosis will most usually be made and treatment will be advised. Some symptoms that may indicate a more serious problem when dealing with abdominal pain include vomiting blood, blood in the stool, fever, prolonged constipation, abdominal pain during pregnancy, pain following an injury to the abdomen, painful urination and if the abdomen is tender and painful during palpation.

Constipation

Although not something that many people like to talk about, constipation is common and most all people will go through episodes at various times in their lives. The mechanism in which stool exits the body is caused by intestinal muscles moving the stool. These muscles are innervated by nerve cells in the intestines and these nerves cells connect directly with the celiac ganglion. The celiac ganglion connects to the spinal cord by way of nerve roots at specific levels of the thoracic and lumbar spine. It is thought that any dysfunction or nerve impingement at these specific levels of the spine may interfere with proper bowel function, leading to constipation. Because of this possibility, chiropractic physicians commonly see patients who suffer from constipation. There have been studies done, on both adults and children, that have shown positive results in the treatment of constipation with chiropractic manipulation. While children are generally treated initially by pediatricians and gastroenterologists with recommendations of increased fluid intake, fiber supplementation and medication, up to 50% of children do not respond to these treatments. Chiropractic care, along with an appropriate diet and proper fluid and fiber intake, is a conservative treatment option for constipation that can have beneficial effects for both children and adults.

Every business owner is aware that effective marketing is a component of any successfully run endeavor. Healthcare clinics require marketing just as a shoe store or a car dealership do. Without marketing, how will people know what you do or will they even know you’re there? A chiropractor marketing strategy does not have to be complicated, nor should it ever be unethical. Although the number of patients walking through the front door equates to business revenue, making patients feel as if they need treatment when there is no medical problem, should never be employed. Chiropractic marketing can do more than just bring in new patients; it can also make a chiropractic physician more known to other healthcare providers near their clinic and in an entire community. The type of marketing that a chiropractic physician uses will generally define what type of clinic they run.

Marketing Strategies

There are some basic marketing strategies that a chiropractic physician can use to generate more business. For instance, some chiropractors market to the community by offering health seminars. These seminars are advertised to the public and then generally take place at their clinic. This gives prospective patients an opportunity to meet the doctor, tour the clinic and they also learn valuable health information during the seminar. Another outreach type form of marketing is joining a local “group”. This can include joining a rotary club, a health club or offering services with local high school sports teams. This will make the community more aware of your practice style and your personality and skills as a doctor. Medical doctors in the area will be more prone to refer patients to a clinic if they have an understanding of the chiropractic clinic and have a good working relationship with the chiropractor. Many times an MD will not refer a patient to a chiropractor because they do not know which chiropractor in the area would offer the most effective and ethical treatment for their patient. Making medical connections in the community is a guaranteed way to get referrals. Above all other forms of marketing, the best way to attain a good reputation and become a successful healthcare provider is to be a great doctor. Patients who are satisfied will become your greatest marketing tool. They will refer family and friends and mention your services to any number of people. No matter what other forms of marketing you choose for your clinic, if patients are treated ethically and experience improvement with their health conditions whenever possible, then their word of mouth praise will be the best marketing a doctor could hope for.

A chiropractor education begins with a desire to treat conditions of the musculoskeletal system without the use of drugs and to manage and maintain caring and ethical medical practices for maximum patient benefit. Typically, students applying to a chiropractic educational institution have completed a bachelor degree from a university and are looking to expand their educational and professional scope by attaining a post-graduate degree in chiropractic medicine. The application process requires certain coursework to be completed by the applicant in order to be accepted into the chiropractic program. As each state and individual schools have different educational pre-requisites, it is important to research carefully the admission information for your chiropractic school of choice. Once accepted into the chiropractic physician program, the four year journey will begin with two years of course work that is designed to prepare chiropractic students with a broad base of knowledge of the human body and the function of the musculoskeletal system. These in-depth classes include but are not limited to microbiology, pathology, anatomy and physiology with cadaver lab and biochemistry. Students are expected to successfully pass these courses in order to continue in the chiropractic program. If a student completes the course with a failing grade, the course must be retaken, resulting in a delayed graduation date.

Student Chiropractic Physicians

Following successful completion of the first two years of class study, the final two years of a chiropractic education consist mainly of clinical experience. Chiropractic educational institutions have on-site health clinics, offering conservative care services to patients within the community. The student chiropractic clinic operates just like any other chiropractic office except that the student doctors are closely supervised by professional clinicians during their shifts. Student doctors are required to manage current patient care as well as establish new treatment plans for new patients. Student chiropractic physicians will order tests when necessary and refer to other medical professionals when necessary. They are required to communicate efficiently with their patients, their clinicians and other members of the clinic staff. They are also required to complete a minimum number of patient hours prior to graduation. During the final months of their education, chiropractic students will take chiropractic board examinations. If these board exams are successfully completed, following graduation, the new chiropractic physician will be eligible to practice in their state of choice. Because a chiropractic degree is professionally regulated, a chiropractic physician will also be required to complete a certain number of continuing education credits every three years, this number of credits will vary from state to state.

Becoming a chiropractor is an important decision that requires research of the educational process, the profession itself and the continued required education during the course of the professional career. Students who wish to apply to a chiropractic school must first become familiar with the admissions requirements at the school that they choose, as each school and state may differ in requirements. Educational counselors can offer additional information to make the admissions processes go more smoothly. Part of this process also includes information about financial aid, housing costs and any scholarships that may be available to students. When the admissions process is complete and a student is accepted into a chiropractic program, they will begin with two years of coursework designed to build their foundation of knowledge that is focused on the musculoskeletal system and its many functions. These courses must be successfully completed to continue on schedule in the chiropractic program. If difficulty in a specific course is a problem, there are always student tutors that offer their help for a fee.

Chiropractic Program

The last two years of a chiropractic program involve a required number of patient hours to be performed under the supervision of a licensed clinician in a student chiropractic clinic. During this portion of a chiropractic student’s education, they will learn the real-life experience of treating patients in a clinical setting. Many chiropractic schools also participate in outreach programs in their communities such as with the Salvation Army and their students will spend a number of hours treating the public at those locations. Many students, during their final years of chiropractic school, will also volunteer to become teacher assistants, or TA’s. These assistants will help a professor to grade tests, tutor students, offer teaching assistance during anatomy labs and more. This experience can be incredibly helpful for the professor as well as their students and also for the teacher assistant. It develops confidence and an ability to relate information that will be a helpful tool when they become a chiropractic physician in their community. During the end of their educational career, chiropractic students will prepare for and take their licensing board examinations and after their clinical hours are complete and their exams passed, they will become chiropractic physicians and begin their rewarding professional careers. For more information on individual chiropractic schools, admissions processes and their educational programs, visit their websites or contact their admissions offices to request information.

When your tooth hurts, you seek out a dentist. When a skin problem arises, a dermatologist can offer relief. For problems with the musculoskeletal system such as back pain, a chiropractic physician is your best option. Chiropractor back pain treatment plans are solely created on an individual basis, to fit each patient to their specific healthcare needs. There are many causes of back pain and many locations throughout the back where pain can arise.

Cervical Pain

The cervical spine is the region of the back that includes the spinal vertebrae from C1 to C7. This neck portion of the back can be injured from whiplash, sprains, strains and other forms of trauma and poor posture. A cervical spine fracture or a herniated disc will cause a tremendous amount of pain in the neck.

Thoracic Pain

The thoracic spine includes vertebrae beginning at T1 and extending to T12. This portion of the spine is the longest segment, covering most of the back beginning at the upper shoulders and extending to near the bottom of the ribcage. This large segment of the spine is the least flexible and because of this, back pain is less common in the thoracic spine.

Lumbar Spine

The lumbar spine contains the L1 through L5 vertebrae. It is this region of the spine that, when there is dysfunction or injury, will cause low back pain. Low back pain is very common and in most cases the cause of pain is not life-threatening. There are some rare medical conditions that do produce feelings of low back pain however, so it is important to seek treatment for persistent low back pain.

Diagnosis and Treatment

A chiropractic physician is trained in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of back pain. The goal of chiropractic care to is eliminate the cause of the back pain whenever medically appropriate through conservative care options such as rehab, massage therapy and chiropractic manipulation. From a patient evaluation and physical examination, a chiropractic physician will determine if treatment is appropriate. There are some medical conditions that would prevent a chiropractor from beginning chiropractic care for a patient and in these instances, the patient would be referred to another medical specialist for care. For those patients that are indicated for chiropractic treatment plans, the length and type of care required for resolution of the back pain will be dependent on the severity and duration of the pain.

Many people choose to become a chiropractor because they want to become a professional in an area of healthcare that focuses mainly on the musculoskeletal system and treatment options that do not rely heavily on pharmaceuticals. A chiropractic physician has the responsibility of bridging the gap between mainstream medicine and more conservative treatment options, for the good of their patients and for the betterment of the healthcare community. This means an understanding of proper referral systems when indicated, establishing and maintaining excellent and trustworthy communication between various types of healthcare providers and most importantly, continually bettering ones knowledge as a physician through courses of continuing education, to guarantee the most current forms of effective treatment plans for a patient. A person who chooses chiropractic medicine as their career of choice will enjoy a long and successful tenure if they continue their learning throughout their career and treat their patients with knowledgeable and well-rounded care.

Educational Career

A student who has chosen to pursue a chiropractic degree will be required to complete some amount of undergraduate coursework before being considered to a chiropractic educational institution. In many cases, the requirement is 90 credit hours, or an associate degree, from an accredited university. Often times, chiropractic students begin a chiropractic program with a bachelor degree already completed but, as of 2005, only one chiropractic school requires a bachelor degree to be completed prior to admittance. It is estimated that this trend of bachelor degree standards may become more common and instituted in more chiropractic colleges over time. Once enrolled, the first two years of a chiropractic students career will consist of in-class coursework including anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and pathology to list a few. During the third and fourth years of a chiropractor’s educational career, more practical clinical courses are required. During this time, a chiropractic student will provide supervised care to patients in a clinical setting. They will also create treatment plans for their patients and learn when to refer a patient to different healthcare providers when necessary. It is during this clinical period of their education that chiropractic students get a real sense of how a healthcare setting works. They have to communicate well with office staff to provide timely care for patients, they are required to establish treatment plans designed specifically for individual cases and they need to effectively manage their time throughout the clinical shift to keep an appropriate pace. Upon successful completion of the clinical portion of their education, chiropractic students are required to complete state licensing board examinations to become eligible to professionally practice in their desired state. Once a licensed physician, a chiropractor is required to complete a certain amount of continuing education credits for license renewal every three years. This continual required education is set in place for all healthcare providers to ensure that at all stages of a career, a health professional is up-to-date on the best and most current forms of treatment for their patients.

Professional associations are designed to represent and promote their members, educate the public and other professionals about their history and current events, keep their members up to date on any legal matters that may affect the course of their careers and serve as a basis for all member professionals to guide their philosophy regarding their profession. For chiropractic physicians, they can become a member of a chiropractors association for these same reasons. There are two well-known chiropractic associations; the ACA (American Chiropractic Association) and the ICA (International Chiropractors Association).

The ACA

The earliest form of the American Chiropractic Association was founded in 1922 by a group of former chiropractic members of the UCA (Universal Chiropractors Association). The ACA was started for the sole purpose of separating this group of chiropractors who did not believe in the original founder’s UCA association rules that all members adhere only to pure chiropractic philosophy. This group of chiropractors embraced a broader scope of care for their patients and had a strong desire to improve the professional standards for chiropractors. Because more and more chiropractors were leaving the UCA in favor of the ACA, the founder of the UCA, BJ Palmer, was not re-elected as acting secretary and left the association to found another organization, the CHB (Chiropractic Health Bureau). Following Palmer’s exit from the UCA, the group worked more closely with the ACA and the two associations joined in 1930, becoming the NCA (National Chiropractic Association). The NCA is the predecessor to the current ACA.

The ICA

The ICA was originally founded as the CHB by BJ Palmer. He began this association following his departure from the UCA in 1926. He strongly disapproved of a new group of thinking that could change the philosophy of chiropractic and therefore he wanted to create a separate association for pure chiropractic members only. From 1926 until 1940, this association was known as the Chiropractic Health Bureau, and, in 1940, the name was changed to the ICA.

Brief History

Although this brief history may seem a bit complicated, to put it in more simple terms, the ACA is the association that represents members of the “mixer” chiropractic generation. These doctors are evidence-based physicians, who enjoy working hand in hand with other medical professionals and progressing the profession to keep chiropractic medicine current as medical evidence evolves. The ACA is the largest chiropractic association in the United States. The ICA is a direct descendant of the original chiropractic philosophy that all disease can be cured with spinal manipulation. These members may commonly be referred to as “straight” chiropractors. As expected, there remains a great deal of strain between these two groups of chiropractors.

What does it mean to find the best chiropractor in your area? Well, the best chiropractor for you is one that offers the services you most need for your healthcare problems. Chiropractic physicians do not all practice the same style of care. For some, they received additional schooling for specific styles of treatment. Some are trained in pediatric care while others received diplomates in sports chiropractic care. Some chiropractors treat the spine only while others offer a more broad approach to healthcare by providing rehab and employing other conservative techniques such as massage therapy, physical therapy, heat and ice therapy, traction, ultrasound and electrical stimulation for their patients. So, to find the best chiropractor for you, it takes a little research of local chiropractic physicians in your area to decide who you would like to choose. Online searches will bring patients to various chiropractic websites. These websites will offer general information about the doctor, the clinic, the clinical staff and what style of care they offer the community. Many times, a chiropractic physician will offer consultation visits to allow a patient to become familiar with their practice and to inform them of what they can expect if they choose to become a patient.

Conservative Care

For sports players, from high school athletes to professional athletes, a chiropractor who has additional training and certification as a sports chiropractic physician is the best chiropractor for them. They will receive conservative care that includes sports rehab and physical modalities designed to bring back sports performance and to prevent possible re-injury. For a family that is looking for a doctor to help with musculoskeletal problems with their children, a pediatric chiropractor is the best chiropractor for them. The best chiropractor for patients and clinics that need radiographs read and reported on would be a chiropractic physician that has received a diplomate with the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology (DACBR). For prospective patients, finding the right chiropractor is important. Asking their primary care physician or family and friends who have used chiropractic services is a good start. Good reviews from more than one source about a certain chiropractor is always a positive, that way the patient will know that the doctor offers excellent treatment and produces results. No chiropractic physician will be the best for all patients, as they all treat in different ways. But if you research and find a treatment style that would work well with you and your healthcare needs, then you will be able to find your best chiropractor.

Akihabara is an area in Japan within the city of Tokyo. This area is also referred to as Akihabara Electric Town and the literal meaning of the name translates to the Field of Autumn Leaves. Many people shorten the name to Akiba. The main source of revenue in the area of Akihabara is the sales of robotic, electronic and computer and anime goods. For people who are searching for old and new video game systems and games, Akihabara is a great place to look. Akihabara is well known as being the original location of stores that first offered personal robotics and robots. The streets of Akihabara are lined with stores and the area is visited by many tourists as well as locals each year. The Tsukuba Express is a railway system that connects Akihabara (the central area of Tokyo) with Tsukuba City. An Akihabara chiropractor clinic that offers chiropractic care as well as massage therapy, acupressure and osteopathic care is called the Largo Body Care Room. This health care center offers patient hours Monday through Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm and Sundays and holidays from 3 pm to 9 pm.

Chiropractors and Osteopaths

Aside from the Largo Body Care Room, there are many other chiropractors and osteopaths that practice within close proximity to Akihabara. These physicians have been educated at chiropractic colleges in Japan, the United States and other countries as well. The website, www.sunnypages.jp, provides a list of these physicians, the area in which their clinics are located, what type of services they offer and if there are English speaking employees on staff. This site also gives a short description as to the educational background that a physician has achieved and a few words on how they practice. The English speaking information is important as many times, chiropractors in these areas will be treating English speaking tourists. Manomedica is a clinic located in Tokyo that offers specialized chiropractic care with chiropractic physicians that speak English. They offer care for all ages, including pediatric chiropractic care, standard and specialized consultations, herbal remedies, manual therapies such as joint manipulation and deep tissue massage and neurological testing and techniques. This is an established clinic that has been offering conservative care for patients for many years. The doctor on staff will establish an individual conservative health plan following an initial consultation and examination. For more information about this clinic, visit their website at www.manomedica.com.

As with all states, the state of Washington has many different chiropractors to choose from. Finding a Seattle chiropractic physician can be easy when using online search sites that specialize in connecting potential patients with practicing chiropractors in the Seattle area. The Washington State Chiropractic Association provides online resources for patients as well as information for chiropractic physicians practicing in Washington state. Their website provides information about the chiropractic profession, any past and current government legislation relating to chiropractic, tabs for chiropractic physicians to post advertisements, look for or post job openings or to search for continuing education courses. Patients can search the site to find chiropractic clinics in their area. In the Seattle area, there are hundreds of chiropractic physicians to choose from. When searching for chiropractors in Seattle, the website www.citysearch.com will provide a listing of chiropractors and also show what, if applicable, certain chiropractors specialize in. This site also states in what neighborhood a chiropractic clinic is located. Some Seattle chiropractors specialize in children who complain of bed wetting and other pediatric issues, some provide care to athletes in certain age groups, many chiropractic physicians in Seattle work in multidisciplinary groups with other health care providers and others may be found working at hospitals or outpatient clinical settings. Some searches allow a prospective patient to look specifically for a straight chiropractor (mainly works to correct health issues with only spinal manipulation), a mixed chiropractor (combines joint manipulation with other forms of therapy) or a reform chiropractor (works closely with medical providers and does not agree with all theories of chiropractic care).

Practicing Chiropractic Physicians

According to the chiropractors directory at www.healthprofs.com, there are currently no practicing chiropractic physicians in the Seattle, Washington area that accept Medicaid as a form of insurance payment. It is advised that because of this, if a patient is insured by Medicaid and wishes to receive chiropractic care, that they expand their search and look for chiropractic clinics in King County, and if that produces no results then to do an online search of the entire state of Washington. Since long travels are not always possible and if a patient wishes to be seen by a specific chiropractor in Seattle, some clinics will provide a printout of what their charges are for certain treatments and this can make it easier for a patient to decide what amount of care they will be able to afford.
