Acupuncture and Menopause

Acupuncture needles

Although acupuncture has been practiced throughout the world to help treat gynecologic problems for over two thousand years, acupuncture in the United States has only, for the last two decades, been recognized as alternative treatment in the medical community. All women will experience some form or another of menopausal symptoms, from hot sweats to increased irritability to insomnia and fatigue. As all women are different, going the path of acupuncture will vary from woman to woman as well. An acupuncturist will tailor a woman’s treatment to her specific needs.

Balancing Hormones

At the onset of menopause, a woman’s body will cease to perform the function of ovulation, thus causing many hormonal changes that lead to the various symptoms. For this reason, acupuncture can be incredibly helpful in aiding the body to restore and regulate the balance of hormones. It is also recommended to take a look at your diet and make any changes to add more nutrients that your body will be needing. Lifestyle changes along with acupuncture can greatly increase your chance at becoming successful in feeling better overall. Studies have been done and are continuing to be done to document the relationship between acupuncture and menopause. To date, acupuncture has been shown to reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes and insomnia helping women to achieve restful sleep. The studies of acupuncture and menopause are encouraging and show no signs of any negative side effects making acupuncture a safe avenue for any woman to examine.
