What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

When Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) occurs, the nerves become swollen and irritate the median nerve in the hands.  The median nerve directs sensations to the thumbs, fingers and small muscles that allow the fingers to move.  CTS is caused from overuse of the fingers and hands.  Symptoms include tingling sensations and numbness in the hands.  Usually, pain occurs at night and gradually increases as symptoms progress.  Pain can extend up to the arms and it may be hard for some people to grip small objects or perform other basic tasks.  Causes of CTS may be the result of arthritis, diabetes, pregnancy, or repetitive work such as typing.  People with Carpel Tunnel Syndrome should seek medical attention as it can cause irreversible nerve damage.

Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncturists place small thin needles into the problem areas to clear pathways that block energy from flowing throughout the body.  When acupuncture is performed, the pathways are opened and blood circulates more efficiently.  Acupuncture points for carpal tunnel syndrome are on the hands, thumbs, wrists, or arms, as well as the neck and even the back.  The number of sessions depends on how severe the case is and how long it has been a problem area.  Acupuncture is said to be more effective in treating CTS than pain medication or surgery.  Also, stretching the hands and wrist can be very helpful in reducing numbing sensations or pain.  Stretching will increase the range of mobility which will eliminate some irritation.
